The Golden Hour | Born Wild Photography

Updated: Mar 9

Have you heard about the golden hour?

The golden hour is defined as 60 minutes of uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact between mom and her newborn, and this has several health benefits for both mom and baby. Skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding will release hormones that are important for mom and baby to bond and connect, in addition to that it will cause the uterus to contract and stop bleeding. Research has also shown that the golden hour decreases stress in both baby and mom, is important for successful breastfeeding, baby cries less and baby’s temperature is more stable.

If both mom and baby are healthy, this golden hour should be respected and encouraged, and medical procedures such as weighing, blood tests etc should wait to later. If any monitoring is necessary is should be done when the baby is on the mom’s abdomen.
